Under the wet crust of the country there is fuel gas which has been included as the best resources of Bangladesh. It is a very fortunate notion that Narsingdi district is also rich in natural gas. The district's gas field was discovered in 1990. The well was excavated with the help of Petrobangla’s management and financial assistance. The gas field is considered as the first stratigraphic receptacle in Bangladesh. During the excavation, two gas zones capable of producing commercially produced gas are found. The first is located 9,506 feet above the sea level and the second one is 10333 feet deep in the sea. In addition to these two major gas zones, there are four smaller zones. It is expected that if the second gas field is properly excavated the other four zones will also be capable of producing gas commercially. Currently, about 27 million cubic feet of gas per day is being transmitted in the national electricity grid.
The oldest area of Narsingdi district is present in the southeast part of ShibpurUpazila, near the Dhaka-Sylhet highway where the gas field is located at a place named Kamarteq. In addition to gas, crude oil is being extracted from that field.
It is notable that this field is included in block 9. This block is very promising, which has led to the development of the block by the major oil companies. If the government takes realistic steps in this regard, it will emerge as a potential project.
